The clothes went a great way in people’s life before the twenty century. In Europe it helped to determine people’s income, social status or age. It is well known that in Ancient India color scheme was also paid much attention. Monks wore yellow clothes, the kings were clad in white, etc. In Ancient Egypt and China silk and flax, which only priests and kings wore, were rare and expensive fabrics; they showed the power of kings and priests. Although the society has moved to a new stage, apparel remained a factor helping todetermine social status.
On the one hand, dress tells us a lot about a person’s economic conditions, tastes and tidiness. Clothes can tell you absolutely everything about a person, even his character traits. In this case apparel is what we look at at first sight. Of course, while conversing with a person, everyone notices what this person is wearing. If he is not dressed carefully, the opinion about him may be changed, because if a human does not look after himself it means that he is uncareful in other issues. Sometimes apparel obliges a person not to be himself, creating the borders and the bounds of decency. For instance, in a formal situation a diplomat behaves decently and complies with the rules. But he changes, once he finds himself in a different place.
On the other hand, looking at the clothes and making some notes, no one takes into consideration tastes of another human. The teenager, wearing black, may be regarded as a Goth, but he or she in fact is justan ordinary boy or girl. The man, wearing old and torn clothes, may be thought of as a poor man. But you should not judge him by the clothes he wears. It is possible he has not enough money for better clothes or feels better in the torn ones. He is poor and does not stand out among bright attire of social surroundings, but his soul is rich, filled with light and warmth. Take the opposite of him – a rich, well-clothed man. He is rich on the outside, but he is poor inside. He tries to hide his poorness under the clothes. There is another opinion, that people, which stand out against the crowd and wear bright and modern clothes, are like predators pretending to be otherwise.
To conclude, I can say that clothes is not the main factor determining a person’s nature; however, you should pay attention to what you wear and take into consideration tastes of your interlocutor. As for me, first of all, I look at a person’s mind, behaviour, ability to communicate. “Meet by clothes, see off by mind”seems to me quite a wise and exact expression.
