Английское слово «law» (в переводе «закон, право», заимствование из скандинавских языков) относится к ограничениям на различные формы поведения. Некоторые законы носят описательный характер: они просто описывают, как люди обычно ведут себя. Другие законы предписывают: они предписывают, как люди должны себя вести.
