the olympic games, an international festival of sports originated in ancient greece in 776 b.c. they were held at a four-year interval (called olympiad) for

the motto adopted by the ioc –“citius, altius, fortius” made its appearance at the antwerp games too. the ioc has also a second motto: “the most important thing is not to win, but to take part.”

the soviet athletes made their début in the olympic arena in 1952 in helsinki, the host-city of the 15th olympic games.

the first olympic winter games were staged in chamonix, france, in 1924. for the next 68 years, the winter games were held the same year as the summer games. a new tradition began in 1994 with the winter games held in lillehammer: the winter olympics are still held every four years, but in a different year from the summer games. the xxii winter olympics were held in sochi, 2014, russia. more than 2,800 athletes from 88 nations competed in 15 winter sport disciplines. at the xxxi summer olympic games held in 2016 in rio de janeiro more 12,500 athletes from 205 nations competed in 28 sports.
