According to the legend, King David hunted one day in 1128. Suddenly his horse was frightened by a deer which had appeared from nowhere. King David fell down from the back of his horse and found himself on the ground in fatal danger of being killed by the deer's antlers. In desperation he grasped them and the antlers miraculously changed into a crucifix. That night King David pledged to build an abbey for canons devoted to the Cross. "Holyrood" means "Holy Cross". By the early 1300s there was a Royal Residence which was built next to the Abbey Church. Today the Palace is used as a Royal Residence and is often closed for royal visits in the middloe of May and during the last two weeks of June and the first week of July.
