Born in the South-West of Portugal in a noble family, serving as a naval commander, da Gama at the age of 32, had a successful siege of the French ships off the coast of the Algarve in Portugal. In 1490, the Portuguese decided to find an ocean route to India in order to put an end to the Muslim monopoly of trade with the East and addressed the family da Gama. Ironically, the father Vasco died before the trip, so he had to lead the journey.
Vasco da Gama 8 July 1497, da Gama and a crew of 170 people, left the harbour of Lisbon with four three-masted ships. They sailed South to the Cape Verde Islands, and in November he rounded the Cape of Good Hope going into uncharted waters (for European seafarers). Ten months after the departure of Portugal, in may 1498, the court Vasco da Gama reached Calicut, shopping center on the southwest coast of India, where they found an abundance of spices, precious stones and silk.
