I have never asked myself any questions about past times. However, everything changed when I went on a trip to Egypt. I was in Synai peninsular and I seldom went outside the hotel's territory. The very first impression of ancient and current Egypt made me ask myself, "How did those people survive in the area with no free access to good quality freshwater and food?"
The sun burns everything the major part of the year. Locals are tired and exhausted. The area where Egyptians live are often dirty. Moreover, it is rather difficult to meet people in other places but markets. There you risk purchasing very cheap goods for much money if you cannot bargain.
I think local Egyptians do not like tourists or accept them as human beings. They view each new person in the market who came with money, and they want that money. That is why they smile in the hotel, beach, market and other places if they think that you can purchase their services and goods from them.
In general, the trip was excellent and I liked being there, but I would prefer not to cross the gates of the hotel anymore.
