Acid rain is a consequence of air pollution. Smoke produced by burning coal, oil and petrol contains gases - sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. These gases enter the atmosphere, where they dissolve in droplets of water, forming weak acid solutions, which then fall to the ground with rain. Acid rain causes fish death and damages forests in North America and Europe. They also spoil the crops and even the water we drink. Acid rains do harm to plants, animals and buildings. Their impact is particularly noticeable near cities and industrial zones. The wind carries clouds with droplets of water, in which acids are dissolved, over long distances, so that acid rains may fall thousands of kilometres from where they originally originated. For example, most of the acid rain that falls in Canada is caused by the smoke of factories and US power plants. The consequences of acid rain are quite understandable, but no one knows exactly the mechanism of their occurrence.
