There are more than 200 species of owls living on every continent except Antarctica. Owls have super feelings that help them hunt prey all over the world. Different species of owls live in different habitats; some species of owls live in wooded areas, tropical forests, grassy plains and deserts. Owls can live on trees, in hollowed-out logs, inside cacti, in pits in the ground, in barns or abandoned nests of other birds. They don't make their own nests. They sleep during the day and hunt at night. They feed on small animals, especially mice and large insects. Owls eat all kinds of animals from rabbits, black grouses and ducks to rodents and small passerine birds. They can fly silently and they can also hear very well. Owls are able to hear prey under leaves, plants, mud and snow. They can catch small animals in complete darkness. The size of their eyes helps them see in the dark, and as they are very far-sighted, it allows them to notice prey from a distance of several yards. In addition to the hooting, owls make many other sounds. The owl is a bird dedicated to Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, which is one of the reasons why owls symbolize wisdom and knowledge, and the owl is even depicted in Greco-Roman currency as a symbol of status, intelligence and of course wealth.
