CARRIE GOES TO A DEPARTMENT STORE

Carrie reached Dearborn Street. Here was the great Fair store

with its crowds of shoppers. She thought she would go in and

see. She would look at the jackets.

She paused at each article of clothing. How pretty she would

look in this, how charming that would make her! Carrie stopped

at the jewellery department. She saw the earrings, the bracelets,

the pins, the chains.

But the jackets were the greatest attraction. When she

entered the store, she already had her heart fixed on a jacket

with large motherofpearl buttons. The cut was all the fashion

that fall.2 She said to herself there was nothing she would like

better.

Here she saw Drouet who was coming up to her smiling.

“Let’s go and look at the jackets,” he said as if he had read

her thoughts.

When Carrie got the jacket in her hand, it seemed so much

nicer. The saleswoman helped her on with it. It fitted perfectly.

It was just her size, not a bit loose. She looked quite smart.

Carrie turned before the glass. She could not help feeling

pleased as she looked at herself. It was so becoming.

“That’s the thing,” said Drouet. “Now pay for it.”

“It’s nine dollars,” said Carrie, after she had asked the sales

woman how much it was. She took out one of the bills and gave

it to the cashier.

From there they went to a shoe department where Carrie
tried on some shoes. Drouet stood by and when he saw how nice
they looked, said: “Wear them.”
Then Drouet advised her to buy a purse made of leather, a
pair of gloves and stockings.
Carrie thought that she would come the next day and buy
herself a skirt to match the new jacket.

Mike: Hello, I'm going for a holiday next month. Could you recommend an exiting place to

go?

Sam: Yes, sure. Are you planning a long trip?

Mike: I don't think so... I'd like to go away for about three weeks, probably.

Sam: Okay. Do you prefer active leisure like hiking or are you looking for a opportunity to just relax?

Mike: I was thinking about Europe, the UK, probably. I've heard it's a beautiful country with rich culture and visiting it is a good way to boost your English.

Sam: Agree with you. Do you have a particular city in mind?

Mike: London would be great, but also it can be a bit expensive. Maybe Stratford-upon-Avon for a start?

Sam: It's a lovely city and Shakespeare's hometown, actually. You will enjoy it.

Mike: How much is this tour?

Sam: It depends on the accommodation, some hotels that are a bit cheaper, some are more expensive. But usually it's about 470 pounds. It's about 645 dollars.

Mike: That will do. What hotel do you recommend?

Sam: I think Hamlet's Hotel will suit you well. The prices are not very high, the food is delicious and it's right in the centre of the city.

Mike: Great! That's what I need. Thank you, I'll book it.

1) I have found two nice illustrations that can help us with our project, "Best ways of sightseeing."  Both of them just show different ways of sightseeing.

They will illustrate our project better.

2) In the first photo, there is a couple of young people walking along one of the streets of an unknown city, whereas in the second there is a large group of tourists in a museum or art gallery listening to the guide.

What is more, in photo one, people are wearing more comfortable sports shoes and light summer outfits, while in photo two people are wearing warm closing, some of them even are wearing scarves or high-heeled shoes. They most probably arrived at the museum by bus.

3) In my opinion, both ways of travelling have their advantages and disadvantages. For example, on a guided tour the group will get more information, than those people who travel by themselves. However, it might be more expensive.  As for travelling on your own, it seems to be cheaper, but you can stop at any place longer and visit more places.

4) Personally, I wouldn't like to travel on my own because I enjoy making new friends during my trips. I feel more safe and comfortable while hanging out together with other tourists, and less complicated when I follow a definite program.

So, shall we use these photos in our project? Call me when you are ready to discuss if we can use them. Bye-bye.
