On any given school day, over 1 billion children around the world head to class.
More children and adolescents today are enrolled in pre-primary, primary and secondary education than ever before. Yet, for many of them, schooling does not lead to learning.
A lack of trained teachers, inadequate learning materials, makeshift classes and poor sanitation facilities make learning difficult for many children. Others come to school too hungry, sick or exhausted from work or household tasks to benefit from their lessons.
The consequences are grave: An estimated 617 million children and adolescents around the world are unable to reach minimum proficiency levels in reading and mathematics – even though two thirds of them are in school.
This learning crisis is the greatest global challenge to preparing children and adolescents for life, work and active citizenship.
JOANNA: Please, come in, have a seat. Would you like to drink? Coffee? Mineral water? GREG: Oh, I (1) will (have) a coffee please. JOANNA: Lucy, please, could you make two coffees? Well, thanks for coming this morning. I (2) ….. (told) you why I asked you here. Um, as you know, there (3) have (been) some big changes in the company. In fact, we (4) are toing to (restructure) the whole department. GREG: Yes, I know. When (5) is (it going to happen)? JOANNA: Everything (6) will have (been) finished by the summer. Um, the thing is, under the new structure your job (7) will (probably/disappear). GREG: Really? Is that certain? JOANNA: Well, we (8) are (havinge) a meeting next week to finalise all the plans, and of course I (9) will (let) you know what we decide. Anyway, you don’t have to worry. GREG: Oh? (coffee arrives) JOANNA: Well, as I was saying, you don’t have to worry. We (10) will (offer) you a new job. You (11) will (have) more responsibility, and the salary (12) will (be) much better. GREG: That’s wonderful, thank you very much. What exactly (13) will (the new job/involve)? JOANNA: Well, we (14) are going to (expand) the whole customer services area. If you accept the job, you (15) will (be) responsible for the new team. Um, it (16) ….. (means) a lot more work, of course. What do you think? GREG: It sounds great, but I (17) will (need) a day or two to think about it. JOANNA: Of course, no problem. Look, I (18) will (not/be) in the office for the next few days – I (19) am (visiting) our subsidiary in Hungary. (20) Will (you/have) an answer for me by next week? GREG: Yes, I (21) will (give) you my decision on Monday.
