I. reading. here is a passage from the article why i like england written by susan l. townsend. read the passage and answer the questions that follow the text. i like living in england because everywhere else is foreign and strange. the only language i speak is english. i dropped french at school and took up hurdling with the athletic team instead. but i wouldn't like anyone to think that i don't like abroad. i do. abroad means adventure and delicious food, but abroad is also tiring and confusing and full of foreigners who tell you that the bank is open when it's not. i am naturally interested in english churches and i passionately love the english countryside. though i will admit that 'it looks better on the telly than it does in real life', as a child said to me once on an outing. i like english weather; like the countryside it's constantly drawing attention to itself. i started this article in a room filled with sunlight, but now a strong wind has materialised. i like the reserve of english people, because i don't want to talk to strangers in trains, unless of course there is a 'cow on the line' causing an hour's delay. in which case my fellow passengers and i will happily spill out (tell) our life stories to anybody we can get to listen. i like the way in which the english cope with disasters (бедствия): cut our water off and we will cheerfully queue at a stand pipe in the snow. i'm happy to live in a country that produces important things: wonderful books, literature, gardeners. i asked a friend of mine where, given the choice and enough money, he would choose to live. he replied gloomily (мрачно), "there isn't anywhere else." another friend when asked if she'd ever go on a world cruise said, "no, i'd rather go somewhere nice." complete each of the following statements using the most appropriate word from the article, (completion) 1. susan likes living in england because all the other places are and strange to her. 2. at school susan preferred hurdling to learning . 3. english is attracting people's attention because it is changing all the time. 4. some people think that english looks better on television. 5. on the one hand, abroad means and delicious food to susan. 6. but on the other hand, abroad is supposed to be tiring and . 7. susan feels proud of english , books and gardeners.
