An athletic festival with competitions in music and poetry was held every four years in Greece. The period between the games was called an Olympiad. The games were held in honour of Zeus, the principle God of the Greeks, who according to the legend lived on Mount Olympus. The festival lasted 5 days and became a symbol of peace and friendship because no wars should be waged during the Olympiad. The athletes competed in running, boxing, wrestling, horse and chariot racing and the like. The winners were given Laurel wreath in the Temple of Zeus. The Olympic Games were held nearly 12 centuries and were abolished in the early Christian era in 394 A.D.

The Olympic Games were revived only in the end of the 19th century due to Baron Pierre de Coubertin. The first modern Olympic Games took place in Athens in 1896. Since then the Games have been regularly held every four years in different countries of the world.
Participating in the Olympic Games is a victory in itself. The winners of the competitions are given Olympic medals: Gold - for a champion, Silver – for a second prizer and Bronze – for a person who became the third.
Nowadays the Olympic Games have become a wonderful tradition which helps to bring people close together.
We all often use transport. It helps to cover long distances very quickly. Transport greatly facilitates our life. Transport can be personal and public. Personal transport is primarily the car, motorcycle, bicycle, etc. Public transport includes bus, trolley bus, metro and trams.
I often use public transport. It is convenient and cheap. My favorite mean of transport is the tram. From early childhood I often travelled by tram. In addition, there’s the tram line running close to my house. So, only a couple of steps and you're at the tram stop.
The tram is an old enough mean of transport. It appeared in the first half of the 19th century. Originally the trams were horse-drawn. And the usual trams on electricity appeared in 1881.
The tram is accessible, convenient and environmentally friendly kind of transport. So whenever I need it I take a tram.
