Jordan Romero, a resident of Big Bear, California, became the youngest person to climb Mount Everest on May 23, 2010.
It surpassed the previous record set by 16-year-old Nepalese resident Temba Tsheri.
Romero called his mother on a satellite phone from over 8,800 meters.
“He said,“ Mom, I'm at the top of the world, ”said Leia Ann Drake, the happy mother of the young record holder. She watched her son ascend from her home in California through an online GPS system.
- There were many tears and words of love. I just asked him to get home as soon as possible, ”Drake said.
An American teenager who climbed the summit of Kilimanjaro at the age of 9 was inspired by a drawing in the corridor of his home school: the highest points of all 7 continents were depicted on the wall.
