History of Saint Petersburg. Saint Petersburg was founded in order of Peter I on May, 16, 1703(on an old calendar - on May, 27) . Originally a city was named Санкт-Питер-Бурх in honour an apostle Peter and consonant with the Dutch city Sint - Petersburg. And already to 1924 Saint Petersburg was renamed to Leningrad.The second World war left the heavy imprint in history of city. The blockade of Leningrad lasted 872 days - from September, 8, 1941 for January, 27, 1944. Until now there are not exact data on the amount of lost - different sources talk about victims from 300 thousands to 1,5 millions. From official data this number about 700 thousands.A city was bloodless, but stood on end. on the rank of city-hero was May, 1, 1945 appropriated him.on September, 6, 1991 Leningrad became Saint Petersburg again.
