When we want to buy something we go to a shop. There are many kinds of shops in every town or city, but most of them have a supermarket, a department store, men's and women's clothing store, a grocery, a greengrocery, a butchery, a bakery, a diary and so on.
As my parents are extremely busy on weekdays I often go shopping to help them. I like to do my shopping at big department stores and supermarkets. They sell various goods under one roof and this is very convenient.
A department store, for example, true to its name is composed of many departments: ready-made clothes, fabrics, shoes, sports goods, toys, china and glass, electric appliances, cameras, radio and television sets, computers, stereo cassette recorders, cosmetics linen, curtains, etc. A department store is usually a multi-storey building. There are also escalators in big stores which take customers to different floors. The things for sale are on the counters so that they can be easily seen. In the women's clothing department you can find dresses, costumes, blouses, skirts, coats, beautiful underwear and many other things. In the men's clothing department you can choose suits, trousers, overcoats, ties, etc. In the knitwear department you can buy sweaters, cardigans, short-sleeved and long-sleeved pullovers, and woolen jackets. In the perfumery they sell face cream and powder, lipstick, lotions and shampoos. Besides, there are florist’s, gift and souvenir departments. As my friend will have a birthday party in a week and I'm one of her guests I decided to buy a present for her yesterday, on my day off. I must confess it was so difficult to make a suitable purchase in such a huge shop with a lot of counters and shelves. The shop-assistant suggested looking at a beautiful water-colour. I liked that nice picture very much and I was sure my friend would like it too. The price of the present wasn't very high. So, I paid the money at the cash-desk. The cashier gave me a receipt and I came up to the shop-assistant with it again. I produced my receipt and obtained wrapped parcel with a string. She thanked me and added they would be always glad to see me at their shop. A supermarket is a very big food shop with different departments selling different foodstuffs as sausages, fish, tinned food, macaroni, flour, cereals, tea, sugar, salt, pepper, spices, fruit, wine, sweets, chocolates, etc. The supermarket has many self-service counters. You can choose what you like and take it off the counter with your own hands. You don't have to go to different shops for different foodstuffs. You do all your shopping in one place. It saves a lot of time. A supermarket also usually has a special department selling all kinds of household goods, like soap, sponges, detergents, tooth-pastes, toothbrushes, crockery and so on. Another shop we frequently go to is the green-grocery which is stocked with cabbage, potatoes, onions, garlic, cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, beetroots, green peas, lettuce, cauliflower, oranges, lemons apples, pears and what not. Everything is sold here ready-weighed and packed. At the butcher's (shop) there is a wide choice of meat (beef, mutton, veal, pork), poultry (duck, goose, turkey, chicken), mince, bacon, ham, sausage, lard and chops. We buy fish (fresh, smoked, tinned), herring, and cod, salmon, haddock and caviar at the fishmonger's. If you call round at a diary you can buy milk, sour-cream, cheese, cottage cheese, yoghurt, butter and many other products there. At the baker's we buy brown and white bread, buns and rolls, biscuits, cakes and cookies. When I am short of time I do my shopping at the stalls near my house. The method of shopping may vary. It may be a self-service shop where the customer goes from counter to counter selecting and putting into a basket what he wishes to buy. Then he takes the basket to the check-out counter, where the prices of the purchases are added up. If it is not a self-service shop, and most small shops.are not, the shop-assistant helps the customer in finding what he wants. You pay money to the cashier and he gives you back the change.
