Всё просто - глагол take переводится как "отнимать время у кого-то на что-то..." . Употребляется без предлога. Например, it takes me two minutes to get to school. - Дорога до школы отнимает у меня 2 минуты.
А в данном случае имеет место быть согласование времён, поэтому глагол take приобретает соответствующие формы или окончания...
