Big Ben is the symbol of Great Britain and one of the most beautiful sights of London. It's the largest and the most famous clock in the world.
Originally, Big Ben is a tower. It's one of the highest towers of Westminster Palace. Big Ben is very popular with spectators, nobody is allowed inside the tower. But if you are lucky, you can hear how the bell stricks.
Officially, the clock has started its work on 31 May 1859. Big Ben is the huge bell inside the building. Its weight is about 13 tones and its rings every hour daily: once at one o'clock, twice at two o'clock and so on.
There are many hypotheses for the origin of the name Big Ben. The most popular one suggests that the bell was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, who was responsible for the installation. Some of people say he was really tall and that's why this bell is called big.
In world practice, there are two areas in the school system: classical and alternative. The first direction has a long history and is called "general education" or "classical". At the beginning of its existence, schools of the classical type had a great advantage in that the child, starting from the age of seven, was in a social environment, brought up by professional teachers and acquired the necessary knowledge. The disadvantage of such schools was that all schools were mainly intended for working young people in obtaining primary intellectual skills and educating obedient performers of the will of the state. A teacher in such a school performed three functions: a) educational, b) educational, and c) propaganda. Therefore, at the very beginning of the 20th century (in the 1907th year), Maria Montessori creates a second or alternative direction in the education system. She departs from the basic doctrine of secondary schools in terms of educating the hard worker-performer (performer: the will of the teacher, the will of parents and the will of the state) and puts forward a new doctrine in the form of the development of a harmonious personality. The method of Maria Montessori, followed by the Waldorf schools of Rudolf Steiner, was a breakthrough in a new quality in the education system.
