Mrs. Warden needed a nanny to take care of Joe, who was 7, and placed an advertisement in the newspaper.
So Mrs. Warden hired Mrs. Jinks in the belief that she was a nanny. Mrs. Jinks took the job in the belief that it was as a dancer.
By the time they had realized the mistake it was too late.
Joe was pleased by the error. There was something very attractive about Mrs. Jinks. Maybe it was her appearance or her pet snake.
So in the next four weeks Joe taught her everything he knew about nannying. He took her to the library and together they looked through the books about nannyies. They practiced such activities as bathing, dressing and tidying. He even showed her how to tell him off.
When Mr. and Mrs. Warden came back, they found the house more organized and tidier and Joe cleaner and quieter than ever before. As to Mrs. Jinks she soon realized that life as a nanny was much more pleasant than life as an exotic dancer.​
