London
London is the capital of Great Britain, its political, economic and cultural centre. It is one of the largest cities in the world and a huge port. Its population is about 9 million people. London was founded more than two thousand years ago. It stands on the Thames.
London has three parts: the City of London, the West End and the East End. The City is the financial centre of the United Kingdom. The West End is the most beautiful part of London. The best hotels, restaurants, shops, fine buildings, parks and gardens are situated there. The East End is an industrial district of London. There are many factories and docks there.
London has many places of interest. One of them is the Houses of Parliament with the famous Clock Tower Big Ben – the symbol of London.
Buckingham Palace is the residence of the Queen.
Another interesting place is Trafalgar Square with the monument to Admiral Nelson in the middle of it.
Westminster Abbey is a beautiful old church. Many great Englishmen are buried there.
There are many museums, libraries and galleries in London. The most famous ones are the British Museum, the Tate Gallery, the National Gallery and others.
One of the oldest buildings is the Tower of London. Many years ago it was a fortress, a royal palace and then a prison. Now it is a museum.
London is an interesting city. The best way to know London is to visit it.
