Old Jerome was very rich but he did not have children of his own. He adopted a boy, named Gilbert, who had lived close to Jerome’s house. Old Jerome was fond of him. He also loved Barbara, his wife’s niece, who live in his house. He thought that some day Barbara and Gilbert would marry. The letter came in the morning. Though she knew it was from Gilbert, she was not able to read it because she had not been taught to read or write. Her father had never sent her to school. But her quick mind prompted her what to do. Nevada was sure that Barbara would be glad to take a ride. She ran to the door and told the servant that they would go. She had never riden in an automobile before, and she believef that they would have a good time. Barbara was sitting in her room. She was holding a letter in her hand. She could not open it because it was not addressed to her. It was addressed to Nevada who had gone to the theatre before the letter arrived. Barbara would give it to Nevada when she returned from the theatre. Gilbert gave her a paper and said that there was an article about that part of the West where Nevada lived. He said it would be interesting to her. But Nevada even did not touch the paper. She got nervous — how to tell him that she had never gone to school.
