1. English has become the language of science, air traffic control, the world of computers, and most of the Internet. And in many countries, where there are other competing languages and people groups, English has been chosen as a common second language. This has happened in Nigeria and Ghana.

2. The Vatican has produced a new dictionary of modern words in Latin. "There are lots of words that Classical Latin could not possibly know the meaning of, like drugs or words connected with politics. So we decided to translate them, say the proud authors. The word pizza, for example, is translated as "placenta compressa"

3. In 1611 came the printing of a book which has had a great effect on society and culture. It was King James' translation of the Bible. For almost the first time in England, anybody who could read had access to the Bible in their own language and in words which were easilyunderstood.

4. Learn to keep the conversation flowing with people you meet. Firstly, practise by talking to as many people as you can: waiters, cashiers, neighbours. The more you practise, the better you'll get. Also read everything -- newspapers, books, magazines, reviews, even catalogues. The more information you have, the more you can talk about. realistic

5. The big holiday in Scotland is Hogmanay, or New Year, and it is a Scottish song that is sung all over the world at midnight on New Year's Eve. It was written by Robert Burns, the famous Scottish poet, and you may find some of the traditional words a bit difficult to understand, but that's the way it's always sung - even by English people.
