Text ECOLOGICAL PROBLEMS OF BIG CITIES

There are over 150 supercities in the world with population from one to 15 million and more. Tokyo, New York, London, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro and Moscow arejust a few of the cities hich have become supercities.

People in the supercities suffer from polluted environment: bad water, bad air and noise. A new term, urban (городской) climate, is used now for such cities. It means high temperature, oppressive atmosphere and intensive smog.

Some experts consider that it is practically impossible to protect the big cities from pollution. The World Health Organization (WHO) studied air pollution around the world for over eight years. It measured two things: the level of sulphur dioxide ($02) in the air

and the level of smoke. Sulphur dioxide and smoke pollute water and have serious effect on forest, buildings and health of people.

In the WHO report it is shown that the cities with the most considerable level of C02 in the air are Milan, Teheran, Prague, Santiago and 550 Paulo. However, some cities with clean air get worse in winter. Helsinki, for example, becomes one of the cities with the largest proportion of it in the air in winter. This must be connected with the heating of houses. One can also mention (упоминать) Glasgow and Warsaw which suffer in the same way.

My marvelous journey began when we, all of a sudden, went to the safari in Kenya in the middle of a summer. Having flown across the ocean we found ourselves surrounded by roaring nature. National parks fascinated us with picturesque landscapes; they were vivid and swarming with wildlife. Elephants and giraffes were peacefully eating leaves, lion prides were resting in preparation for the night hunt. An antelope herd ran by, probably spooked by some predators. Graceful zebras were grazing quietly in the plains, and imposing buffaloes were going to a watering place unhurriedly. At nights we heard hyenas’ cries, that disturbed a night hunt for nocturnal predators. Screams of the eagles, soaring high in the sky, woke everybody up at dawns. We’ve spent in Africa only one week, but it was wonderful and unforgettable! Having gone to African safari once you won’t ever be able to resist the urge to come back!

Summer is my favorite season. Summer holidays give the longest rest from studying of the year that’s why I like them so much.In June I stayed at home and my parents were at work. But I was glad because at last I had time for myself. I read books, listened to music, watched films and visited my friend. I spend most days outdoors and got a nice sun tan.Then I spent two weeks in the summer camp on the seaside. It was a real fun. I met a lot of new friends. Every day we enjoyed something special - games, carnivals, competitions, performances. We went to the seaside twice a day. There we swam, bathed in the sun, played volleyball on the beach, made sculptures of sand. We had discos every night, but not too long. I guess, those were the most exciting weeks of the summer. It gave me bright impressions, lots of funny photos and some new friends.Then my parents were on vacation and so they took me to my parent’s place in the village. It’s a very picturesque place with a forest and a river nearby. I was happy to see my grandmother and grandfather. I spent hot days on the riverbank. Once we went hiking with my parents, made fire, gathered some berries. The summer forest is very beautiful. In the evening I usually helped in the garden.Last month of the summer I was at home again, having rest from such an intensive rest! I did usual things and prepared for school. I like my summer holidays!
