Ernest Hemingway was born in 1899 in Chicago. His father was a doctor. When he was young he worked as a journalist, but in 1924 ha decided to devote himself to writing.
During his life he travelled around the world and he used his experiences as the basis for many of his novels. He was in Italy during the First World War and based A Farewell to Arms on his experiences there. During the Civil War he went to Spain and described his experiences in For Whom the Bell Tolls.
He was passionately interested in bullfighting, hunting and fishing.
Hemingway wrote about twenty novels and short stories and received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1954. He died in 1961.

Michelangelo Buonarotti was born on the 6th of March 1475. He lived in Florence and Rome for most of his life. He lived in Florence and Rome for most of his life. He was a painter, sculptor and architect. His most famous works are probably the paintings in the Sistine chapel, and his statue of David. He never married. He works continuously all his life until 6 days before his death in 1564.

William Shakespeare was born in Stratford I 1564. His father was an important businessman in the town. In 1582 he married Anne Hathaway, who was eight years older than him, and he had three children. In 1587 he went to London where he worked as a writer and actor. He wrote a lot of plays and poetry. He retired to Stratford in 1612, and died on the 23rd April 1616.

Vincent van Gogh was born in 1853 in village on Holland. He had a brother, Theo, who was two years younger than him. He was a painter and his most famous painting are ‘Sunflowers’ and his paintings of Arles in the south of France, where he lived in 1888. Today his painting sell for millions of pounds, but during his life he was not successful, and he was financially dependent on his brother. He had mental health problems all his life and finally committed suicide in 1980. His brother Theo died one year later.
