Традиция отмечать международный День Земли зародилась в США в 1970 году, в 1990 году этот день стал международной акцией. А с 2009 года по решению Генеральной ассамблеи ООН праздник приобрел официальный статус. Начиная с 2010 года его отмечают ежегодно 22 апреля.
