Task 1. Reading Monarch without a kingdom
This November a hundred million butterflies will drop from the sky over Mexico, like autumn
leaves. But for how long? Genetically modified maize could mean extinction for this beautiful
butterfly. Rafael Ruiz reports. In the US, millions of farms grow genetically modified maize
which is pure poison for the butterfly.
In November, millions of Monarchs fall like bright, golden rain onto the forests in the
mountains of central Mexico. In the silence of these mountains you can hear a strange flapping
of wings, as the Monarchs arrive at their destinations,
Before reaching their journey's end they have faced strong winds, rain and snowstorms and
they do not all manage to reach their destination. When the winters are really bad, perhaps 70
per cent of them will not survive. Their long journey to Mexico is thought to be one of the most
amazing events in the whole of the American continent. The long journey, with all its dangers,
begins again. When they get there they will stay until the beginning of April, when their
internal calendar tells them that it is time to go back.
These delicate creatures now face danger of another kind - from scientific progress. According
to the investigations of the European Union, the Monarch butterfly may disappear in several
decades.
Laboratory experiments have shown that half of the butterflies which feed on the leaves of
genetically modified maize die within 48 hours. Not all experts agree that this variety of maize
is responsible for the threat to the Monarchs. In spite of these doubts, the European Union has
refused to approve new crops of genetically modified maize until further investigations have
been carried out.
Task 2. Answer the questions

maize?
5. Is it true that all Monarchs will reach the destination?
6. When do Monarchs go back?
7. What happens during winter?
8. Are you for the scientific progress or no, why? Explain.
9. Find one odd sentence in the text
Task 3. Translate and choose the right variant

The Russian Federation is the largest country in the world. It occupies about one-seventh of the earth's surface. It covers the eastern part of Europe and the northern part of Asia. Its total area is about 17 million square kilometres. The country is washed by 12 seas of 3 oceans: the Pacific, the Arctic and the Atlantic. In the south Russia borders on China, Mongolia, Korea, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Azerbaijan. In the west it borders on Norway, Finland, the Baltic States, Byelorussia and Ukraine. It also has a sea-border with the USA.There is hardly a country in the world where such a variety of scenery and vegetation can be found. We have steppes in the south, plains and forests in the midland, tundra and taiga in the north, highlands and deserts in the east. There are two great plains in Russia: the Great Russian Plain and the West Siberian Lowland. There are several mountain chains on the territory of the country: the Urals, the Caucasus, the Altai and others. The largest mountain chain, the Urals, separates Europe from Asia. There are over two million rivers in Russia. Europe's biggest river, the Volga, flows into the Caspian Sea. The main Siberian rivers — the Ob, the Yenisei and the Lena — flow from the south to the north. The Amur in the Far East flows into Pacific Ocean.Russia is rich in beautiful lakes. The world's deepest lake (1600 meters) is Lake Baikal. It is much smaller than the Baltic Sea, but there is much more water in it than in the Baltic Sea. The water in the lake is so clear that if you look down you can count the stones on the bottom.Russia has one-sixth of the world's forests. They are concentrated in the European north of the country, in Siberia and in the Far East.
On the vast territory of the country there are various types of climate, from arctic in the north to subtropical in the south. In the middle of the country the climate is temperate and continental.Russia is very rich in oil, coal, iron ore, natural gas, copper, nickel and other mineral resources.Russia is a parliamentary republic. The Head of the State is the President. The legislative powers are exercised by the Duma. The capital of Russia is Moscow. It is its largest political, scientific, cultural and industrial centre. It is one of the oldest Russian cities. At present, the political and economic situation in the country is rather complicated. There are a lot of problems in the national economy of the Russian Federation. But in spite of the problems Russia is facing at present, there are a lot of opportunities for this country to become one of the leading countries in the world. Movies Affect People

Movies are popular because people are great watchers. They like to watch other peoples' lives. They like to live vicariously. By going to movies, we can escape our own lives, share other people's emotions, and imagine ourselves as someone else.

Many of our lives are not as adventurous or glamorous as the lives in movies. We do not battle evil all day long and then go back to our luxurious penthouse apartment. We just go to school, do our homework, eat, talk to our friends, and sleep. We need a little excitement in our lives and we find excitement at the movies.

Humans are very emotional people. We all like to cry and laugh. Fortunately, there is not much to cry about in my life so I like to go to sad movies where my heartstrings can be tugged. I also like to go to comedies so that I can laugh. I tend to cry and laugh more in a dark movie theater than I do in broad daylight.

Now I am a student, but I know someday I will be a scientist or a politician or a famous model. When I go to the movies, I can see my role models. I see how they act, what they wear, how they talk. I can prepare myself for the day when I will be like them.

Even though my life is quiet, I can go to the movies and watch someone else's life. I can share their emotions and their everyday life. I wonder if they would like to share mine.
