A father was jailed last
week for restraining his
daughter.

2. The furniture in the waiting room was very old – считается, что слово «Furniture – мебель» является неисчисляемым существительным. И когда речь идёт о мебели в значении «вся мебель» то это слово становится эквивалентом слова «группа», «стая» и т.д. и к нему применяются правила для единственного числа, т.е. в данном случае будет «is». Таким образом, на мой взгляд, в данном предложении ошибки нет.
