Тема: Canada
Canada is situated in North America. In fact, it is one of the largest countries in the world. Its area is about
10 million square kilometers. Canada's only neighbour is the USA. The border between the two countries is the
longest unguarded border in the world. Canada is washed by three oceans: Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean and
Arctic Ocean. The national symbol of this country is a maple leaf.
Though this country occupies a vast territory the population is only about 30 million people who are
concentrated mostly along the southern border in such cities like Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City and
others.
The word “Canada” comes from one of the Red Indian languages – “Kannata”, meaning “village”. The
story of Canada goes back over 400 years. The French were the first settlers to this country. In 1759 Canada
became a part of the British Empire. In 1931 it became independent from Britain. Today Canada is an
independent federative state, but formally Elizabeth II, the Queen of Great Britain, is a head of the state, but she
doesn’t rule. The real power belongs to the Prime Minister and his Cabinet.
Canada is a union of ten provinces and three territories. The main provinces are Ontario, Quebec, British
Columbia, Alberta, etc. Ontario is the centre of The Niagara Falls, one of the world's most voluminous
waterfalls, famous both for its beauty and as a valuable source of hydroelectric power. Quebec is the biggest
province in Canada; its area exceeds three times the area of France.
It is a bilingual and multicultural country, with both English and French as official languages at the federal
level. All Canadian children have to learn both French and English at school.
Nowadays Canada is a country with very high standards of living. This country is particularly advanced in
the areas of health, education, social protection and human rights.
