Запомни: если можно существительное заменить на местоимение 3 л. ед. ч., тогда ставь is
Если перед тобой множ. число (или 2 лицо ед.ч), тогда are
Это как в русском языке, есть глагол связка быть. Ты ведь никогда не скажешь. Погода быть отличная. Ты скажешь погода была отличной. или погода отличная. Вот также и англичане используют связующий глагол, грамматические признаки которого я указала выше.).
Первый случай ты можешь сделать по тому грамм. правилу, которое я написала выше.
Во втором случае используется время прогрессив в значении настоящего. Но и там is глагол-связка, производное от to be.
