A. Hong Kong is a region of China located on its southern coast, with
most of its urban areas concentrated on Kowloon Peninsula and
Hong Kong Island. The territory is also spread out across
200 other islands. The area doesn't have enough flat land, on
which it is possible to build cities. Most of the land is extremely
hilly, sometimes even mountainous.
B. Hong Kong is a very humid place. The summers are extremely hot with occasional showers and the winters are sunny and mild with occasional cold winds from northern China, snow id very rare. The lowest recorded temperature is - 6 degress Celsius. If a summer is especially rainy, typhoons can sometimes occur, resulting in floods.
C. In 1842 Hong Kong bacame o colony of the British Empire as part of the peace treaty after a war between Britain and China. Over the years te colony slowly expanded into the nearby islands. By the end of 19th century Hong Kong had a become a major economic centre. In 1997 the region was returned to China, but its system of government is still separate from China's.
D. Even though over 90% of the population of Hong Kong is Chinese, more than half of them have some form if British nationality. Most of the people of Hong Kong speak Catonose, but over half of them also speak English. English is considered the second official language in Hong Kong. The mixing of two languages is very common in informal conservation among the bilingual portion of this population.
E. Hong Kong has the largest number of skyscrapers in the world with 317 buildings over 150 meters tall. This is in part a result of the high density of the population in Hong Kong. Skyscrapers and high-rise buildings are a good way to fit more people into a small area of land. Many older buildings are being destroyed and replaced by high-rises.
