Christmas Stories
A) It took Charles Dickens six weeks to write the world’s most famous story “A Christmas Carol”. The story had only four colored pictures in time for Christmas 1843. Dickens said he laughed and cried as he wrote the story. It wasn’t easy to write it. For inspiration, he walked two or three kilometers each night around the black streets of London. On Christmas Day in 1843, he went skating.

B) King Henry VIII of England loved eating. He once sat down to a Christmas dinner that lasted twelve hours. The servants brought him the first dish at three p.m. on Christmas Day, and the last at 2:30 the next morning.

C) A member of Coca-Cola Company invented the well-known image of Santa Clause. The producers of this drink were unhappy because it was a “summer” drink. They wanted to sell it in the winter, too. So, a man, called Haddon Sundblom, thought about his friend, who looked like Santa Clause: with around face, a short beard and a red nose… Thanks to Coca-Cola, half the world is now giving each other presents for Christmas.

D) The Spanish Сonquistador Hernando Cortez found turkeys in Mexico in 1519 and brought them to Europe. In fact, thanks to South Americans we can now enjoy other tasty things. They grew corn, chili pepper, tomatoes, potatoes and pumpkins. How can you do without popcorn, peanuts, or chocolates in the cinema now?

E) In 1399, King Richard II of England had a rather large dinner in London —the meal included 28 cows, 300 sheep and deer, and thousands of chickens. More than ten thousand people were at that dinner, which lasted three days! There were a thousand cooks to prepare the meal.
