ЗА АНГЛИЙСКИЙ Present day grandparents follow their grandchildren on social media, but online preferences of the various generations couldn't be any more different. The over -55s are gradually joining Facebook, which means that they will soon be the second largest user group on this site, with 3.5 million users aged 55-64 and 2.9 million over-65.
Jane, aged 58, says, 'I joined as my daughter uploads videos and pictures of my grandchildren and I want to see what they are doing. It is a lot better way of seeing what they're doing than waiting in the post for letters and pictures. That's how we did when I was a kid, but I think I'm fortunate to see so much more of their lives than my grandparents did.'
Unfortunately, it is less likely that Jane's grandchildren use Facebook themselves. Children under the age of 17 are leaving this site – only 2.2 million users are under the age of 17 but they don’t get far from their smartphones. Dara, 16years old, even gets to sleep with her phone. She says that it’s her alarm clock and she looks at it before sleeping and as soon as she wakes up.
Compared with her grandparents’ generation, Dara’s age group spends a lot of time at home surfing the net, which leads to the missing out of having real life. One of the reasons of smartphone and internet addiction among teenagers can be their parents’ behavior as they were the early smartphone adopters.
John, 36, father of two teenagers, says that he would use his smartphone constantly, was always connected and felt like he was always working. And now he is thinking “How could I ban phones for my kids if I constantly used smartphone myself?” So, he decided to cut off the smartphone use in the evenings and weekends, instead he spends this time with his family being a better example for his kids and spending more quality time with them.
