несколько дней белогрудка следит за домом, но войти не может — у будки на цепи сидит злой пёс. наконец, она попадает на сеновал и видит, как мальчишка мучает её детей и кормит их сырым мясом. вскоре один кунёнок умирает, и мальчишка кидает его псу.
с той же ночи в зуятах начала гибнуть птица. вскоре погиб и пёс, съевший кунёнка. белогрудка задразнила его, пёс погнался за ней, повис на заборе и удушился. куница так рассвирепела, что стала появляться в селе и днём, убивая всю птицу. её попытались подстрелить, но только слегка ранили.
зализав раны, белогрудка вернулась. она не знала, что мальчишку выпороли и велели отнести кунят обратно в гнездо, но тот поленился лезть в густолесье и бросил малышей в овражке возле леса, где их придушила лиса. осиротевшая белогрудка принимается душить птицу не только в зуятах, но и в соседнем селе.
поймали куницу, когда та случайно попала в погреб. хозяин дома, охотник, понимает, что куница разбойничает потому, что осиротела, и отпускает её. но белогрудка снова возвращается, начинает свирепствовать пуще прежнего, и охотнику приходится её подстрелить.
в обоих сёлах до сих пор помнят белогрудку и запрещают детям обижать зверей и птиц.
