St.Petersburg is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It was founded by Peter the Great on the marshland along the Neva banks as a gateway to Europe and the sea. Petersburg is indeed a wonderful city with its magnificent architectural ensembles, granite embankment, unique historical and cultural monuments, museums and bridges. If you stop on the Palace bridge and look around, you'll see the Admiralty building, the Winter Palace and the old University's buildings. It's my favourite place in the city.I'm fascinated there by the splendour of colours:the lemon yellow of the Admiralty building, the bluish-green of the Winter Palace and the warm red of the University. On the right bank of the Neva you can see the Peter-and-Paul Fortress. From the first day of its existence it served as a prison for political criminals. Now the fortress is a historical and architectural museum-monument.On the left bank of the Neva the Winter Palace, the former residence of the Russian tsars, stands in Palace Square. It was created by Rastrelli in the eighteenth century. After the revolution it became a part of the Hermitage. The Hermitage has the richest collection of pictures in the world.I am proud of my city.
