Можно ставить" the" перед исчисляемыми и перед неисчисляемыми (нельзя просто посчитать вода, песок, воздух, сахар ). Нельзя сказать " a water", но можно "The water is fresh".
Есть также устойчивые выражения в которых используют только артикль" a" (There is a book on the table.) или только артикль "the" (in the evening...).
