Have you ever seen something so beautiful
that you were at a loss for words? So
mesmerising that all you could do was
stare at it? Well, this is how many people
feel when they see the Kolsai Lakes in
Kazakhstan for the first time. According to
Kazakh legend, these stunning lakes were
once the mirrors of a beautiful goddess
Many years ago, long before the existence
of man, there was a great ruler with
incredible powers. 1) But of all his
creations, he was most proud of Umay, a
goddess of unbelievable beauty.
Everywhere she went, people
complimented her on her beauty.
But one day, she started questioning what
beauty really was. So, she decided to visit
the god of justice to find out. When she
asked him, he just replied, "You are true
beauty 2)Everyone tells me l am beautiful, but I can't see my face. I guess,
I'll never understand what true beauty is,"
she cried. The god of justice was sad to see
her so upset. Then, he had an idea.
"Beautiful goddess, go and find a smooth,
shiny surface. You will be able to see your
face there and finally understand what
true beauty is," he said. 3)
First, she went to the blue sky. But no
matter where she looked, she could not
see her face. Next, she travelled to the
stars as she was sure she would be able to
see her reflection there. But sadly, that was
unsuccessful too. 4) . But there were so
many waves that it was impossible for her
to see her reflection on the water's
surface. The goddess was disappointed,
but she did not give up. She went to the
highest mountains and looked straight at
the ice.
She began to get excited because
she could see a face, but unfortunately it
was not clear enough. She also tried to see
her face in the light of the sun, but all that
she could see was her shadow. She didn't
know where to go next.
The great ruler noticed how sad the
goddess was and asked her what was
wrong. "I am not happy. Everyone talks
about my beauty, but I can't see it. So, l
don't know what true beauty is," the
goddess said with great sorrow. The ruler
looked at her and smiled, "I will help you
with this." 5) "I have created these
lakes for you. Here you will see a reflection
of your face," he explained. The goddess
looked into one of the lakes and trembled.
She saw how beautiful she was and at that
moment, she realised what true beauty
was. She had never felt happier!
